For travelers looking for independence and no set schedules or simply for better access to hidden beaches, a rental car is a good option for either the whole trip or just part of it. We recommend this option only for adventure-minded travelers who are open to the unexpected and do not mind a few challenges along the way.
Costa Rican driving conditions can be intimidating, and directional road signs are often missing. The roads outside of San Jose are usually fine, but they often narrow from two to one lane with little warning. Keep in mind that honking here is considered quite rude. The locals expect to wait or find themselves behind a slow truck from time to time, so they are more patient than drivers in the US. Intersections are rarely four-way, and it can be confusing to determine right-of-way. It is customary to gently tap the horn to thank someone for letting you into their lane.
So, with a positive and adventurous outlook, as well as a good road map or GPS, first time visitors can successfully navigate the country.
We offer everything from compact cars, full-sized cars, compact 4WDs, full-sized 4WDs, and vans. In order to best meet your expectations, it is very important to have an idea of what destinations you plan on visiting in order to choose the best vehicle for you.
We highly recommend compact 4WD vehicles, because they are economical and they enable travelers to navigate the entire country.
Pickup locations include the San Jose and Liberia International Airports, as well as dozens of destinations throughout Costa Rica. For an additional fee, the rental car can be delivered to wherever you would like to begin your rental.
