Our gay Costa Rica highlights tour offers the perfect mix of nature and relaxation. You will have the opportunity to enjoy superior accommodations in the middle of a lush tropical forest; on the slopes of a colossus volcano, surrounded by thermal hot springs, and in green parks next to a mysterious cloud forest. Wake up every day to the sounds of nature, sail around ancient canals, walk over lava fields, and view the forest from on high.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Costa Rica

Transfer from the airport to the hotel will be on your own. Optional transfer service available for US$ 50.00 (1-2 passengers)

Day 2: Tortuguero and the ancient canals

Early in the morning, you will meet your guide and the rest of the group and depart to Tortuguero. On the way, breakfast will be served as you pass through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, a flora and fauna sanctuary covered by an emerald-green mass of vegetation. From the comfort of the bus, you will see open pasture lands and small farming towns, and you will notice a change in the climate, as it becomes a bit warmer and humid while still pleasant. You will eventually arrive at a dock on the Caribbean coast, where a boat will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel.

During the two-hour boat ride, you will pass through the canals sheltered in the jungle of the rain forest. From the boat, you will be able to admire the unique flora and fauna of this area. Also, your guide will enlighten you about biodiversity of the area and you will have the chance to see different birds. Upon arrival, there will be a short briefing about the lodge and the activities included in your package, followed by lunch.

In the afternoon, you will visit the village of Tortuguero where you will learn the about the lifestyle of residents and the significant conservation efforts that some NGOs have developed to protect the sea turtles that come to spawn each year along the 22 miles of the protected coastline.

Day 3: Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero is a great place for ecotourism lovers. During the day, and depending on the weather conditions, you can enjoy a guided hike through the jungle where you will learn how the different animals, insects and birds interact with forest plants, thus achieving a perfect balance of co-existence, or you can explore the secondary canals of this piece of paradise, where you can see different species of mammals, birds and reptiles.

Tortuguero offers a close encounter with Mother Nature. Much of the National Park extends along its unspoiled beaches that serve as refuge for spawning sea turtles, which happens between the months of July and September.

Day 4: Heading to the Volcano

At mid-morning, the journey continues with a boat transfer back to the local dock. From there, ground transportation will be provided to the area of Guapiles, where lunch will be served. Afterwards, use our transfer to continue towards the northern lowlands. This route passes through different towns such as Puerto Viejo (Sarapiqui), San Miguel, Venecia and Aguas Zarcas. Your guide will share with you their history and pecularities. Also, you will enjoy the beautiful scenery and  amazing mountain views, as well as one of the major sources of revenue in the area: agriculture. Depending on the season, you will have the opportunity to crops of pineapple, bananas and sugar cane.

You will arrive in La Fortuna Village by late afternoon where the mighty Arenal Volcano will appear with its impressive perfect conic shape.

Day 5: Arenal Volcano Hike

Discover the sights and sounds of the Arenal Volcano area. Escorted by your guide, you will have a first-hand experience of Costa Rica’s most famed attraction. This adventure takes place on the trails of the Arenal Volcano National Park. You will be taken on a three-mile (5-km) trail that winds through secondary rain forest and leads to places with a great view of the volcano. Along the way, you’ll observe a variety of plants, animals, and volcanic rock formations; you’ll also enjoy views of Lake Arenal.

During this walk, you’ll cross three trails: Las Coladas, El Ceibo, and Lava 1992. You’ll see old lava flows and massive Ceibo trees, and you’ll be able to take pictures of monkeys and toucans, as well as the picture-perfect volcano. You will be fully engaged as you enjoy your visit in the Arenal Volcano area.

Day 6: Monteverde and the cloud Forest

In the morning, you’ll depart from Arenal Volcano to go through the Tilaran Mountain Range to get to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The final portion of your journey will be on gravel roads and give you more time to enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery.

The rest of the day is leisure time. Your guide can assist you in choosing an optional activy, such as a coffee-tour, horseback-riding, or a night walk.

Day 7: Hanging Bridges Tour

The Tree Top walkway is the ideal cloud forest experience for those who wish to explore the beauty of the canopy at their own pace. The walkway consists of eight suspension bridges connected by trails covering 1.9 miles (3km). The bridges vary from 150ft (50m) to 500ft (170m) in length and are suspended at heights ranging from 36ft (12m) to 180ft (60m). At almost 5ft (1.5m) wide, the bridge system is the widest and sturdiest in Costa Rica.

Day 8: Return to San José or sign up to one of our trip extensions

Morning will be leisure time. In the afternoon, we have arranged for you to transfer back to San Jose or continueon an extension of your trip where you can, for example, visit an awesome beach– a great way to end your Costa Rica Journey. Check-in and overnight at the selected hotel in San Jose.

Saturday night in San José is a good chance to discover the wide range of nightlife that the city offers.
