In the Caribbean region of Costa Rica, there is a protected zone of incomparable beauty that begins near the town of Siquirres and covers approximately 25,000 acres as it descends down the Talamanca Mountain Range. This is where you’ll find the Pacuare Lodge.
This is the area known as Pacuare, which constitutes one of the most important protected areas in the region. Its proximity to the lowlands and its high annual rainfall combine to nurture the complex life systems whose abundance makes for extraordinary scenic beauty.
The Pacuare Lodge was built with a minimum impact on the river and rainforest site where it is located. Lanterns and candles provide light, as there is no electricity at the lodge.
No trees were cut to build the bungalows and main lodge. Lumber was purchased from a sustainable reforestation project operated by small farmers. The roofs are made from palm leaves installed by Cabecar Indians living in the area using their traditional style. Aventuras Naturales was the first adventure travel company to acquire parcels of primary forest in this area solely for the purpose of conservation Over the years, they’ve purchased 340 hectares (840 acres) of primary rainforest along the Pacuare River for conservation and in order to offset the atmospheric carbon created by vehicles, which makes their tours carbon-neutral.
Getting to this exquisite eco-lodge is half the adventure, since you arrive and depart as part of a multi-day rafting tour on the Pacuare River.
Guests have the opportunity to experience an unforgettable meal in the Nest: a platform 60 feet above the jungle floor in the branches of century-old Kapok tree, which was considered a sacred tree by the ancient Mayans.
The Pacuare Lodge provides a true culinary experience. The lodge’s kitchen staff is made up of young people from nearby communities.
They don’t really have a chef; they’ve simply developed the talent of local people who taught them the secrets of great food.
They like to surprise guests with combinations of flavours, local ingredients, innovative recipes and presentations. It isn’t fancy, but it’s delicious enough to warrant opening a bottle of good wine, which is why they keep their cellar well stocked with vintages from around the world.
Indulge yourself and enjoy this once-in-a-liftime experience.
Pacuare Lodge for us is pure heaven. There is no electricity and the staff light candles everywhere at night. It’s so romantic.
The concept and seclusion is great. Rafting in and out makes sure that it is quiet, and you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle.
They have great activities for the days you do raft. The service is great. The river guides are also the waiters at dinner, and they are all fun and enjoy joking around.
There is no electricity or WiFi in the rooms, which make it feel even more enchanted. The food at the restaurant is top-notch and fresh.
They ask you in the morning what you want for lunch and dinner. Happy hour drinks are much less expensive than we expected.
The staff are fun and welcoming. Highly recommended for nature lovers. Yes, there might be critters sometimes on your balcony and even in your room. This is their world.
